There are legit targets starting to emerge as potential commitments in the near future for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class.

With the 2020 Texas football recruiting class now locked in, there’s a lot of offers being sent out to 2021 high school prospects. In the same weekend where three-star Skyline safety Isaiah Nwokobia visit Texas, he picked up an offer. Head coach Tom Herman and recently hired defensive backs coach Jay Valai offered him on Feb. 1.

It’s not only the Texas Longhorns football program that started to give more warranted attention to the Dallas, TX, native defensive back Nwokobia. He’s now up to two-dozen schools on his ever-growing offer sheet. And it appears that he is starting to narrow down his finalist schools.

Since the last time that I covered anything having to do with the recruitment of Nwokobia, he managed to pick up yet another Power Five offer. This time, the Washington State Cougars sent Nwokobia a scholarship offer to wrap up his insane month of February. It is ironic that the last two programs to offer Nwokobia were Washington State and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Head coach Mike Leach surely had something invested in him.

Texas was singled out by Nwokobia in the fact that most of the other schools that he reportedly mentioned to 247Sports that he was high on while scheduling his offseason visits were in his corner for a long time. Other schools to watch for that he appears high on at the moment includes the Cal Golden Bears, SMU Mustangs, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and the USC Trojans.

Texas and USC are the only two blue bloods that Nwokobia is high on right now. They are also two programs that didn’t send scholarship offers to him as early as the other three aforementioned schools did. Cal, SMU, and Oklahoma State were among the first 10 programs to offer him.

If Texas can get another visit during spring camp, it would be the second since the beginning of February. That would be huge since Texas would be catching a lot of momentum a few months ahead of when Nwokobia could be potentially announcing his commitment decision.

Other significant schools that sent Nwokobia an offer thus far includes the Ole Miss Rebels, Arkansas Razorbacks, Boise State Broncos, Mizzou Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Maybe one of those programs could leap back into contention to land Nwokobia’s commitment, but there’s a pretty clear list of schools that are appearing as front runners.

Nwokobia ranks as the nation’s No. 507 2021 high school prospect and the No. 29 safety. He also ranks just inside the top 70 prospects out of the state of Texas. This 6-foot and 185 pound safety is starting to pick up a lot of momentum on the recruiting trail of late.

Texas is still without a true defensive back commitment in the 2021 recruiting class. Landing Nwokobia could be a good start to add depth at a position that is already lined up with a lot of talent on the current roster. Keeping the pipeline of safety talent rolling into the Forty Acres is the right move.
