The race is on to figure out who will be the first former player out of the Texas football program to fall off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft class should hold more prominent names in it coming out of the Texas football program than there was last year. Texas hit a new low last year when all it had was defensive end Charles Omenihu (fifth round to Houston Texans) and cornerback Kris Boyd (seventh round to Minnesota Vikings) picked up in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Those two Texas Exes that were picked up during the 2019 NFL Draft fed into the rest of that class out of the Forty Acres were signed as undrafted free agents. Texas had a lot of bargain bin value free agents that were signed after going undrafted in the last decade or so.

Now that could be changing with head coach Tom Herman instilling a certain higher degree of success with this football program. Texas is at least getting back to the point of Big 12 contention year in and year out. They could once again make a run for the Big 12 Championship Game in 2020 if they can contend with the Oklahoma schools, and the likes of the Iowa State Cyclones and Baylor Bears.

Winning 18 games, and two huge bowl games, over the course of the last two years shed a much more positive spotlight on the Forty Acres. And that success should start spilling over to the NFL Draft in due time. Maybe that can start with the 2020 NFL Draft class from Texas Exes.

Five or six players max could realistically get selected in the actual seven rounds of this year’s draft. Texas has a good number of skill position players that could have a lot of promise coming out in 2020 and 2021. But we’ll see what the perception is for this class of Texas Exes in the NFL Draft in less than two full months.

Here’s a look into the definitive ranking of the five best former players out of the Texas Longhorns football program in the 2020 NFL Draft.
