Texas Football: 3 early Longhorns Heisman Trophy candidates
Who can fans focus on out of the Texas football program that serve as solid early 2020 Heisman Trophy candidates/finalists?
Heading into the 2020 offseason, there was a lot to be excited about in terms of who the Texas football program would be returning this fall. Texas will be one of the more experienced and talented teams in the Big 12 during the 2020 college football season.
Texas closed out their run during the 2019 season with an impressive 38-10 win over the No. 11 ranked Utah Utes in the Alamo Bowl. That gave Texas their second win over a top 12-ranked team in a bowl game in the last two years. Texas beat the No. 5 ranked Georgia Bulldogs by the final score of 28-21 in the Sugar Bowl to cap the 2018 season.
However, Texas returns more than half of their starters on both sides of the ball from their 2019 team. That should be more than enough to at least see a rise in expectations from how Texas performed during the letdown of a 2019 season. Winning eight games, including beating Utah in the Alamo Bowl, wasn’t the worst result for head coach Tom Herman.
But the expectations were much higher on the Forty Acres following a very solid 2018 season in which they beat the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Showdown, won the Sugar Bowl, and appeared in the Big 12 Championship Game. Texas will once again have the expectation to make the Big 12 Championship Game this fall.
The schedule won’t do Texas any favors as they have to take on the defending National Champions LSU Tigers on the road in Death Valley as soon as Week 2. The Oklahoma schools will also prove to be a challenge in 2020. The Big 12 won’t give Texas an easy toad this fall.
At least Texas has a host of potential All-Big 12, and maybe even Heisman candidates to boast in 2020. All they really had last year was then junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
Here’s a look into the three potential Heisman candidates, ranked in order of likelihood to take the honors back to the Forty Acres, from the Texas Longhorns football program in 2020.
