There is a much different story that comes with the Auburn Tigers rising junior running back JaTarvious Whitlow in the transfer portal this offseason than Slade. Whitlow has two years of very proven production in the hardest division of any in college football. The SEC West tested Whitlow for two complete seasons, and he mostly passed the test.

But head coach Gus Malzahn will now be seeing Whitlow leave Auburn and take his talents elsewhere. The former three-star recruit and Lafayette, AL, native has definitely exceeded his expectations coming out of high school thus far. Whitlow actually rated outside of the nation’s top 500 2017 high school prospects during his recruitment.

What Texas football could be getting out of Whitlow is a running back that racked up more than 1,800 total yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns in his two years at Auburn. He averaged more than five yards per carry on more than 300 rushing attempts. He got a large workload, but proved he could handle it.

Whitlow is also a capable receiver out of the backfield and a decent pass blocker. He does need work in a few areas of his game, but mostly finding more consistent production. But he has more than 20 career receptions, and three touchdowns through the air.

Maybe Texas could take advantage of the inconsistent nature of Whitlow’s game and allow him to get more carries when he’s in rhythm. When he’s not, Texas has two or three other younger options they can turn to.
