The Texas football program prepares for the start of spring drills with a more experienced defense than they had last year.

The beginning of spring camp is here and the Orange-White Game is not all that far away for the Texas football program. Texas will be looking to take their game to new heights this fall, and get back closer to the point where they were at two seasons ago when they made the Big 12 Championship Game and beat the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day 2019.

However, Texas has a long way to go to recover from their slight letdown of a 2019 season. Texas finished up the 2019 season with a record of 8-5 (5-4 Big 12), including an Alamo Bowl victory over the No. 11 ranked Utah Utes by the final score of 38-10. Since Texas entered the preseason as a top 10 ranked team in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll, that was largely a disappointment.

The good news is that Texas has plenty of talent and experience returning to the Forty Acres for the 2020 season. This could be the most loaded team that Herman had in his four years since coming over from the Houston Cougars football program. The preseason college football SP+ projcetions from Bill Connelly of ESPN had Texas ranked in the top 15 overall and in the top 25 in returning production.

Recruiting at a high level will also help Texas make a potential rise to national prominence. The 2018 and 2019 signing classes for Texas ranked in the top three in the nation. And the 2020 recruiting class ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Pulling off three straight top 10 ranked signing classes in the nation is an impressive feat.

With all this in mind, how does the defensive depth chart for the Texas Longhorns football program shake out ahead of the bulk of spring ball.
