Cornerback Pt. 1

Starter: D’shawn Jamison, Junior

This will be one of the more hotly contested position battles in spring camp. Texas has a number of options that could start at either cornerback spots and one name that can’t be left out of the mix is to-be junior versatile threat D’shawn Jamison. He raked in 35 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, three pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Jamison is a weapon that the Longhorns can use all over the field. He even had a punt return for a touchdown two seasons ago, in a road win over the Kansas State Wildcats. In fact, both of his kick/punt returns for touchdowns came against Kansas State. The kick return for a touchdown came at home against the Wildcats last season.

Backup: Josh Thompson, Redshirt Junior

The position that has to improve the most on the defensive side of the ball for the Texas football program this fall has to be cornerback. For two years in a row, the Longhorns were shredded in the secondary throughout much of Big 12 play. Last season wasn’t as bad as the year before, which is weird because Texas took a step back in the win column.

However, one player that could really step up and make a bigger impact this year compared to his last three on the Forty Acres is the former safety/nickelback converted to cornerback and redshirt junior Josh Thompson. Last season, Thompson only got to play in three games before missing the rest of the year due to injury. Thompson has 46 career total tackles, one tackle for loss, and two pass deflections.
