Texas Football: 3 NCAA Transfer Portal Longhorns TE targets
With all the novel coronavirus precautions in place now, where can the Texas football program focus on if they want to land a tight end transfer?
The next edition of the 2020 NCAA Transfer Portal Big Board for the Texas football program continues at the tight end position. Tight end is still a fairly inexperienced position for Texas beyond their projected starter for the 2020 season.
Tight end is fairly deep, but doesn’t have anyone overwhelmingly good at the top of the depth chart. The starter that is projected for Texas this fall should be rising senior Cade Brewer. For each of his three seasons in Austin, Brewer couldn’t stay healthy. He played in seven games as a freshman, two as a sophomore, and seven as a junior.
Head coach Tom Herman already moved the former three-star tight end recruit Reese Leitao possibly to the defensive side of the ball to crosstrain at linebacker. Since Leitao didn’t get much playing time at tight end through his first two years on the Forty Acres, a thinner position for Texas like linebacker makes sense for a potential position move.
However, adding depth behind Brewer at tight end couldn’t hurt. Texas does have former four-star recruit and Arizona native Brayden Liebrock ready to go. As about the most highly touted backup in the tight end room, Liebrock sits in waiting for his chance to shine.
Texas could not only use a backup plan behind Brewer, but another piece for the future along with Liebrock. Herman does like his tight ends to be very multiple, hence the crosstraining for Leitao in winter workouts and heading into spring camp.
Here’s a look into the tight end big board from the NCAA Transfer Portal during the 2020 offseason for the Texas Longhorns football program.
