10. 1972 (10-1, 7-0 SWC)

One of the dozens of Southwest Conference Championships the Texas football program racked up before it disbanded came in the 1972 season. The Longhorns got the conference title with the lone slip up coming against No. 2 ranked Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry game. But Texas did get the best of the Arkansas Razorbacks and then Alabama in the Cotton Bowl.

Quarterbacks Marty Akins and Alan Lowry guided this Longhorns team to prominence, and helped them finish up with a No. 3 ranking in the AP Poll. Texas had a top five ranked defense in 1972, and also a top five ranked strength of schedule and strength of record ranking.

9. 1950 (9-2, 6-0 SWC)

There were two losses that saw the Longhorns come up short in disappointing fashion that held them back from winning a national title in 1950. But the Southwest Conference still saw the Longhorns come away with the crown in 1950, which was highlighted by their win over then No. 1 ranked SMU by the final score of 23-20.

The two losses for Texas came at the hands of Oklahoma and Alabama. Those two losses came by a combined margin of seven points, though.

Running back Byron Townsend and quarterback Ben Tompkins starred for this Texas team that had one of the four hardest schedules in the country during the 1950 season.
