Texas Football: 3 ways cancellation of spring game impacts Longhorns
1. Addition time for injury recovery
There was already a growing laundry list of names coming out of the Texas football program that were set to miss spring camp due to various injury concerns. The biggest names of Longhorns players that were set to miss spring ball included junior nickelback B.J. Foster, redshirt sophomore linebacker Ayodele Adeoye, and redshirt freshman running back Derrian Brown.
Now, the Longhorns will have some additional time to get healthier heading into summer workouts. But they will have to be cautious of players either coming in rusty or at least not in game shape. Given all the shutdowns due to the COVID-19 precautions around Austin and the entire state of Texas, it is hard to get into the gym right now.
Texas can’t jump back into full fledged workouts too early as some players will be coming in cold. But the rest of the way should see this Longhorns team more rested and healthy heading into fall camp. All the injuries that Texas suffered in spring and fall camps under Herman’s tenure in the last three years should at least slow down this offseason.
Getting a healthier Foster and Sterns back in the Texas secondary should be huge for the looming 2020 regular season. Texas could also see a healthy and rejuvenated Ehlinger that has taken a lot of hits since his time at Lake Travis High School ended coming back this fall ready to go. This is an unknown factor that is obviously an abnormality in the college football world.
