Even though there is no return in sight for the Lone Star Showdown, a Texas football assistant coach wants it to get back soon.

Before I mention anything having to do with the rivalry that exists (or existed as is the case on the gridiron) between the Texas football program and the in-state former Big 12 foe Texas A&M Aggies, I will say that pretty much everyone that’s a fan of or that is associated with either team wants the Lone Star Showdown back. But one recently hired Texas assistant coach made his thoughts on the matter well-known earlier this week.

A recent report from 247Sports showed that an assistant on staff with the Texas Longhorns football program, defensive line coach Mark Hagen, wants the Lone Star Showdown back ASAP against Texas A&M. There were two key quotes that came out when Hagen released his statements on possibly wanting the return of the Lone Star Showdown.

Hagen stated: “Absolutely. I’m all for playing rivals”. And “it should happen”, when asked about the hiatus in the Lone Star Showdown between the Longhorns and Aggies.

The last time that Texas and Texas A&M met on the gridiron was the last year that both programs were still in the Big 12, in 2011. Texas owns the all-time series edge over Texas A&M with a record of 76-37-5. Texas has won three of the last four meetings against the Aggies to. Texas A&M then bolted to the SEC West ahead of the 2012 season, and the two programs haven’t met on the gridiron since.

There’s still a chance that the Longhorns and Aggies could meet either in bowl season or the College Football Playoff if the two programs were to make it that far at the same time. A Texas-Texas A&M bowl game would draw more attention than just about any other matchup, all else equal.

Although, the schedules for both the Longhorns and Aggies are booked well into the future. Texas is booked beyond the 2025 season, as are the Aggies. That could continue to get further into the future as both Texas and Texas A&M book their schedules well in advance.

The hope at this point has to be that Texas and Texas A&M become true Big 12 and SEC Championship contenders in the near future. That could put each program in position to contend for spots in the College Football Playoff. Other recent postseason games such as the Liberty Bowl and Sugar Bowl pit eligible Big 12 and SEC teams against each other. That might be an avenue to the revival of the Lone Star Showdown too.
