If you thought that the programs that recruited each of the last two defensive ends on this list dug deep to find Gaines, then look no further than a very underwhelming ranking for this Durham, NC, native. To-be redshirt junior NC State Wolfpack defensive end Jeffrey Gunter ranked as the nation’s No. 3,843 2017 high school prospect and the No. 178 strong-side defensive end during his recruitment.

The lower recruiting ranking for Gunter held him to getting offers from just the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. He wound up committing to and signing with Coastal Carolina as part of their 2017 recruiting class, but would transfer before too long. Gunter played two seasons in Myrtle Beach with Coastal Carolina before transferring to join the NC State program in Raleigh.

Gunter got to move closer to his hometown by transferring to NC State, but he has yet to take a single snap to date. He wouldn’t even get to participate fully in spring camp before that was put on hiatus throughout the entirety of the ACC due to the COVID-19 precautions. That could hinder his performance wherever he lands next.

In two seasons with Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt, the 6-foot-4 and 260 pound Gunter registered 75 total tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, two pass deflection, and one forced fumble in 23 games played during his freshman and sophomore seasons. He ranked fourth in the Sun Belt in tackles for loss in 2018, and fifth in sacks.

However, the only sign of caution with Gunter is his lack of commitment to various programs. He was all over the place last offseason before choosing to stick with NC State. At different times, he looked like he would be committing to the North Carolina Tar Heels, Syracuse Orange, and/or Oregon Ducks.
