Texas Football: Former Longhorns S signs with New England Patriots
Former standout Texas football defensive back will now be playing for the New England Patriots after signing a two-year deal earlier this week.
This cycle of free agency in the NFL has been absolutely wild thus far. This run of free agency comes into the midst of all of the precautions surrounding the novel coronavirus. And the Texas football program has a few alumni dragged into the intriguing chaos that is this cycle of free agency in the NFL.
A number of headlining moves included legendary quarterback Tom Brady signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philip Rivers going to the Indianapolis Colts, and Nick Foles landing with the Chicago Bears. And those are just a few of the moves for veteran quarterbacks in the initial days of free agency.
The Houston Texans also pulled off one of the headliner trades this month, sending superstar wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals in return for running back David Johnson. Another big move involved the Los Angeles Rams releasing often-injured star running back Todd Gurley on March 19.
More chaos is sure to ensue in the coming days of the NFL offseason.
But one of the former members of the Texas Longhorns football program that was sucked into the free agency chaos earlier this week was veteran safety Adrian Phillips. The former Los Angeles Chargers reportedly signed a two-year contract with the New England Patriots.
The news that Phillips was signing with the Patriots for two years came from Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports on March 19.
Phillips suited up for the Longhorns from 2010-2013. He was one of the better safeties to play on the Forty Acres in the last decade. Nonetheless, the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers signed him as an undrafted free agent following the 2014 NFL Draft. He played for the Chargers every year since. That was up until now.
In 2018, Phillips was a First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection. That was his first All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in his NFL career. The Garland, TX, native will turn 28 years old on March 28, so he should be entering his prime years in the NFL.
Phillips was one of the first former Longhorns to sign in free agency this offseason. More signings will continue to happen as the NFL is one of the lone sources of non-COVID-19 news in the sports world at the moment.
