An underrated target of the 2021 Texas football recruiting class, 4-Star Lamar Consolidated running back Brandon Campbell, cut them from his top 6.

It was mostly good news for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class on March 23 in terms of the finalist cuts that were dropped various the program’s various high school prospect targets. But the one that went awry for Texas was four-star Lamar Consolidated running back Brandon Campbell. The 5-foot-10 and 190 pound Rosenberg, TX, native dropped his top six finalist schools on March 23, and none of those were Texas.

While the Texas Longhorns football program should be fine at running back given that they signed five-star Salpointe Catholic stud Bijan Robinson in their 2020 recruiting class, missing out on Campbell isn’t a complete blow. Texas should still want to shore up the depth at running back in the 2021 recruiting class, though.

Adding one or two underrated running backs in the 2021 recruiting class will keep the pipeline of talent alive and rolling onto the Forty Acres. Just because Texas signed Robinson in their 2020 recruiting class doesn’t mean that the coaching staff should rest on their laurels.

Nonetheless, the schools that Campbell included amid his six finalists were mostly out of the SEC. There was only one out of the Big 12. The six schools that were included were the LSU Tigers, Florida Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide, USC Trojans, Penn State Nittany Lions, and TCU Horned Frogs.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions for Campbell have two of five experts picking USC. The other three expert predictions are still listed as cloudy. The Rivals FutureCast also favors USC over the rest of the field to land the commitment of Campbell.

It does appear that Campbell is favoring head coach Clay Helton and the Trojans over the rest of his six finalist schools.

However, Campbell ranks as the nation’s No. 325 2021 high school prospect and the No. 22 running back. He also ranks just inside the top 50 prospects out of the state of Texas. He holds 40 schools on his offer sheet at this point. So he cut some pretty significant schools in his latest round of finalists.

The most significant offers that Campbell cut included the Auburn Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Baylor Bears, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Ohio State Buckeyes, UCLA Bruins, Washington Huskies, and obviously the Longhorns. Most Big 12 schools sent Campbell a scholarship offer at some point too.

Texas can definitely recover from this loss on the recruiting trail. They have other running back targets that they still need to prioritize, namely five-star Garland, TX, native Camar Wheaton.
