2. Maryland Terrapins

One program that was hit very hard by the loss of depth to the transfer portal was the Maryland Terrapins. The Maryland offense is one that tends to thrive with the ground game first, and they’ll need a better offensive line situation than they have now to make that work this year.

And there wasn’t a single ACC or Big Ten program that was pursuing Okafor overwhelmingly hard when he was a four-star recruit coming out of Lewisville High School. But this is a good chance to start anew.

The Big Ten schedule could be very difficult for Maryland if they don’t start to stack their depth back up in some regard. They are projected to have four underclassmen starting along the offensive line, and they aren’t returning much from a group last season that wasn’t very good anyway.

Maryland finished out their 2019 season with a record of 3-9 (1-8 Big Ten). A red hot start out of the gates for the offense, including multiple games with more than 60 points scored, slowed way down once Maryland worked into conference play. Head coach Mike Locksley doesn’t have much coming back at any position on the offensive side of the ball to rely upon this fall.

A good temporary fix for Maryland could be similar to what head coach Lovie Smith and the Illinois Fighting Illini did last offseason and just hit the transfer portal as hard as possible. They don’t have much to lose at this point. Maryland won just three games last year and amassed less than 350 total yards of offense per game when it was all said and done.
