Texas Football: 3 biggest Longhorn NFL Draft busts since 2010
Not a whole lot of NFL Draft success for former players of the Texas football program held a few busts over the course of the last decade.
Over the course of the last decade, the Texas football program saw a significant drop in the amount of first round NFL Draft picks that were churned out compared to the 2000’s. Texas can hopefully pick that trend up heading into the new decade, as things couldn’t get much worse than they were throughout the last few years.
Texas is going on five years without a single first round NFL Draft pick. The last time a Texas Ex was selected in the first round was back in 2015, when the New England Patriots drafted defensive tackle Malcom Brown 32nd overall. Since then, Texas has only had one player that was even selected in the second round.
The one Texas Ex drafted in the second round since 2015 was offensive tackle Connor Williams, who was taken by the Dallas Cowboys 50th overall in 2018.
Results for Texas in the NFL Draft hit rock bottom last year. In the 2019 draft, the first Texas Ex selected didn’t come until the fifth round, when the Houston Texans snagged defensive end Charles Omenihu. The only other player from this program that was even selected in the 2019 draft was cornerback Kris Boyd, by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round.
Since Texas, at least by the usual program standards, was down on the gridiron in the last decade, NFL teams are able to find some solid value pickups in the draft off the Forty Acres. There was definitely more boom than bust from Texas Exes at the next level. But there’s still a little bit of both.
Here’s a deeper look into the three biggest busts from the NFL Draft out of the Texas Longhorns football program in the last decade.
