Texas Football: 3 greatest Longhorns never to win the Heisman
Although VY came the closest to winning the Heisman Trophy comparatively to the rest of the finalists in Texas program history, quarterback Colt McCoy had maybe the best season overall from any important position of all-time. McCoy finished second in tough fashion behind former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford in the voting in 2008.
In 2009, McCoy had a very impressive senior campaign in which he finished up third in the final voting for the Heisman Trophy. But that wasn’t the highest he would finish in the final voting in his four-year career on the Forty Acres. Alabama running back Mark Ingram and Stanford running back Toby Gerhart finished ahead of McCoy in 2009.
The passer efficiency rating of McCoy came at a career-high in 2008, finishing up at 173.8. That was good enough for the No. 3 passer efficiency rating in the nation in 2008, and second best in the Big 12. He also tallied up 3,859 passing yards, 34 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions, 561 rushing yards, and 11 rushing touchdowns.
What was more impressive than anything else in 2008 for McCoy was his completion percentage of 76.7 which is still the best in college football history. His career completion percentage of 70.3 is still the second best in college football history (at least as long as the stat was recorded for). His adjusted yards per passing attempt (9.7) in 2008 also ranked in the top five in the nation.
