The 6-foot-8 and 240 pound rising senior Longhorns big man Royce Hamm Jr. did play his biggest role with the team during his junior campaign. Texas got 30 games out of Hamm last season. In those 30 games played, he averaged 2.7 points per game, 2.7 rebounds, 0.4 assists, and 0.6 blocks, while shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 75.9 percent from the charity stripe.

Hamm was a force to be reckoned with on the glass down the stretch for the Longhorns, but he does have a number of areas where he could improve his game. But the former four-star recruit has yet to find his true footing on the Forty Acres. A 7.5 player efficiency rating and 0.4 win shares in one complete season can’t be what Smart and the Longhorns are looking for.

There are a number of areas where Hamm needs to improve, namely on offense. He posted a measly offensive rating of 79.1 last season, but his defensive rating did sit at a career-best 95.4. His box plus/minus rating has also been all over the place in his college career. It started at -7.5, went to 0.6 as a sophomore, and then went back down to -0.4 as a junior.

But the defensive box plus/minus rating for Hamm did sit at an impressive career-best of 4.9 last season. His offensive efficiency just wasn’t up to par.

Hamm serves a clear role, and that could be valuable for both the Longhorns and other power conference teams across the country. If he rises to the occasion and improves his offensive game as the offseason moves along, then he could stick around. But there might be a better opportunity elsewhere.
