The 2021 Texas football recruiting class has an abundance of talent, but not a ton of total commitments as of early April.

Now that so much of the attention for head coach Tom Herman is set on building up the 2021 Texas football recruiting class, we could continue to see a bevy of offers sent out in the next month or two. The novel coronavirus pandemic has shut down pretty much all sports action and tangible news for the time being. A lot of the focus should be going to the recruiting trail right now anyway.

The 2021 Texas recruiting class currently ranks in the top 10 of the national class rankings, per the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings. Texas also sits in the top spot of the 2021 Big 12 recruiting rankings, just ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners. But there are only six commits in place for this class, and Texas will need to start ramping up the quantity of players.

Texas landed well under 17 signees in the 2020 recruiting class, which was fine given all the coaching turnover under Herman’s direction at the conclusion of the regular season. Some of that lack of number of commits still needs to be made up in the next two recruiting cycles.

The good news is that Texas has plenty of time to scout out who they really want to key in on for this dead period for in-person contact that will last through May 31. Texas still is sending out a good number of offers during the extended dead period.

Here’s a look into the five key targets of the 2021 recruiting class for the Texas Longhorns football program that they could realistically land in the near future.
