A big-time target of the 2021 Texas football recruiting class, 4-Star Kennedale safety J.D. Coffey, included the Longhorns in his top six this week.

What now seems like a daily process, various targets of the 2021 Texas football recruiting class dropping their finalist lists on social media, is taking over the news cycle. On a lot of occasions in a good sense, Texas is seeing a lot of their top 2021 targets dropping their latest round of finalist cuts. And some of the most recent good news for head coach Tom Herman and defensive coordinator Chris Ash came from four-star Kennedale safety J.D. Coffey.

On April 7, the Texas Longhorns football program figured out that it would be still in the mix to land Coffey. Dropping his six finalist schools earlier this week, Coffey is still keeping his interest intertwined with teams all over the country.

There were two Big 12 schools in the finalist group for Coffey, two from the PAC-12, and then one each from the Big Ten and SEC. This 6-foot-0.5 and 180 pound Kennedale, TX, native isn’t really concentrating his final schools in any one geographic part of the country.

On April 5 on his Twitter timeline, Coffey posted that he would be “dropping some big news Tuesday”. That news would be this latest round of finalist cuts, down to six schools.

Moreover, the finalist schools for Coffey outside of Texas includes the Baylor Bears, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon Ducks, and Washington Huskies. He’s down to these six schools from more than 30 that sit on his offer sheet as of April 8.

The most significant offers that he cut came from the Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Penn State Nittany Lions, and SMU Mustangs. The most recent offer Coffey came from a school that he cut in this round of finalists, on April 4 from the Boise State Broncos.

The last two visits that Coffey had were unofficials with Oregon and Washington on March 10 and 11. He also had an unofficial visit with Texas back on Jan. 18. Coffey originally received his scholarship offer from Texas on June 5, 2019.

Coffey ranks as the nation’s No. 186 2021 high school prospect, No. 7 safety, and No. 31 prospect out of Texas. He’s one of the highest rated safeties that Texas has offered for the entirety of this recruiting cycle so far.
