One of the last key targets of the 2020 Texas basketball recruiting class committed to the Oklahoma State Cowboys on April 13.

The biggest commitment decision that came this week for a big target of the 2020 Texas basketball recruiting class is the four-star North Star shooting guard Donovan Williams. Texas would not come out on top with yet another key 2020 hoops recruiting target, though.

About 10 days down the line, the Texas Longhorns basketball program will figure out if they will get to land the five-star Vandegrift power forward Greg Brown. As a prospect out of their own backyard in Austin, TX, Brown is now a must-get for head coach Shaka Smart and the Longhorns.

However, the Lincoln, NE, native Williams was down to three schools for his final commitment decision. Williams was down to three Big 12 schools for that matter, the Longhorns, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and Kansas State Wildcats.

Kansas State and Texas would get the short end of the stick once Williams announced his commitment decision on social media on April 13. He announced his commitment to head coach Mike Boynton and Oklahoma State on Monday evening on his Twitter timeline.

Prior to announcing his commitment to Oklahoma State, Williams held offers from 10 schools. He cut the likes of the hometown Nebraska Cornhuskers, Texas A&M Aggies, Bradley, and Missouri-Kansas City, when he announced his top three finalist schools.

The 6-foot-5 and 190 pound shooting guard Williams ranks as the nation’s No. 147 2020 high school prospect, No. 28 shooting guard, and No. 2 prospect out of Nebraska. He was another big top 150 ranked prospect that Texas couldn’t get a pledge from.

Oklahoma State continues their trek on the recruiting trail for the 2020 cycle to land the Big 12’s highest ranked class. They currently hold the top 2020 recruiting class in the Big 12, and one of the top 10 in the nation (per 247Sports Team Composite Rankings).

The main signee that Oklahoma State has in their 2020 recruiting class came from the nation’s top ranked 2020 high school prospect, elite five-star point guard Cade Cunningham. The signing of Cunningham likely had something to do with pulling Williams to Stillwater.

However, Texas still lies without a commit in their 2020 recruiting class. Brown might be the most realistic commit left that they could get. That’s why missing out on Williams to a Big 12 foe like Oklahoma State could be so detrimental.

Texas is accustomed to more success on the recruiting trail under Smart’s direction for the men’s hoops program than they’re having for the 2020 cycle. But this will have to be a patient process since the last major bout of commitments are pouring in for the top prospects of this class.
