A big addition to the 2021 Texas football recruiting class could come from a recent offer, 4-Star John Muir CB Jamier Johnson.

Another key target of the 2021 Texas football recruiting class put them among his finalist schools this month. Four-star John Muir 6-foot-1 and 175 pound cornerback Jamier Johnson dropped his top seven finalist schools on April 13, which provided some good news at a potential position of need for Texas.

In their 2020 signing class, the Texas Longhorns football program landed one true cornerback. That one corner for the Longhorns was four-star John Tyler product Kitan Crawford. While Crawford should help the Longhorns two or three years down the road, they will need to keep the depth rolling in at the cornerback position in the 2021 recruiting class.

The Pasadena, CA, native Johnson would be a huge get for the Longhorns. They don’t yet have a cornerback commit in their 2021 recruiting class either, so prioritizing him is important from here on out.

Moreover, the latest round of finalist cuts that Johnson dropped on his Twitter timeline on the night of April 13 included the Longhorns as the lone Big 12 school in the group. Most of the finalists for Johnson emerged out of the PAC-12, which is unsurprising given that he is a California native. Four of the seven finalists are out of the PAC-12, and two come from the Big Ten.

Although, two of the seven finalists are former members of the Big 12 that left within the last decade.

The other six finalists in general includes the Ohio State Buckeyes, Nebraska Cornhuskers, USC Trojans, Oregon Ducks, Colorado Buffaloes, and Arizona State Sun Devils.

Johnson ranks as the nation’s No. 281 2021 high school prospect, No. 21 cornerback, and No. 25 prospect out of California. And he originally received his offer from Texas back on Feb. 5. The most recent offer he received came from the Fresno State Bulldogs back on April 1.

According to a 247Sports report on April 13, what drew the interest of Johnson to Texas was the relationship he formed with cornerbacks coach Jay Valai. He’s “definitely” planning on taking an official visit once things open back up to Texas and Ohio State. That report also indicates he is planning to make his commitment decision in September.

Johnson holds more than a dozen schools on his offer sheet. He cut around half of the schools that offered him thus far in this round of finalists. The most significant of the offers he cut came from the Arizona Wildcats, Florida Gators, Kansas Jayhawks, Oregon State Beavers, and Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers was after Johnson when recently hired Texas defensive coordinator and former Scarlet Knights head coach Chris Ash was at the helm in Piscataway. Valai was also a positional coach on the Rutgers staff when they were pursuing Johnson. That should help with the niche the Longhorns have among his seven finalists.
