The mentioning of head coach Tom Herman that the Texas football program could still be after linebacker help in the transfer portal is pretty unsurprising.

The NCAA Transfer Portal has really dried up for the Texas football program to pursue any potential candidates in the market in the last couple months. Texas did hit the transfer market in each of the last three years for help at various positions of need during the offseason.

Back in 2017, Texas turned to former Syracuse Orange graduate transfer blocking tight end Kendall Moore for help in the trenches and to secure the pocket to help the passing game. Moore didn’t make a huge impact in the passing game, but he was one of the better blockers Texas had in the mix during the 2017 season.

The following offseason, Texas added former Cal Golden Bears running back Tre Watson and Rice Owls offensive tackle Calvin Anderson to get help at two positions of need. Watson and Anderson were big success as Texas would beat the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl that season.

Then last offseason, Texas turned to the transfer portal to get help along the offensive line again. They hauled in former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets All-ACC offensive guard Parker Braun to help out in the trenches. Braun wasn’t as success of a get out of the portal as the last three transfers, but he still shored up a rather thin offensive line.

In the virtual chat between Texas head coach Tom Herman and Chip Brown of Horns247 on April 14, the skipper mentioned that if they turn to the transfer portal for any position of need, it would be linebacker. And he also implied that they would be turning to the graduate transfer market yet again for help on the depth front at linebacker. It wouldn’t help out much this coming season if Texas got help at linebacker and that player wasn’t eligible right away.

Here’s a look into the four best updated linebacker options that the Texas Longhorns football program could pursue in the NCAA Transfer Portal at this point of the offseason.
