The first name off the board: Devin Duvernay, Wide Receiver

A usual favorite to be the first former Longhorn off the board in the 2020 NFL Draft is the breakthrough ex-senior star wide receiver Devin Duvernay. Projecting a rather realistic round for Duvernay to get picked up, it makes a lot of sense for a team like the Indianapolis Colts in need of a receiver of his skill set to take a flier out on him in the third round.

Common complaints that are going to be heard regarding the draft stock of Duvernay include the lack of proven body of work, limited size, and the usual “he plays in the Big 12” argument. Big 12 wide receivers can see their draft stocks fall when they have the smaller frame like Duvernay does. The SEC usually has the opposite happen for their top wide receivers.

During his senior campaign, Duvernay was one of the nation’s most productive wide receivers. He caught 106 passes for 1,386 yards and 10 total touchdowns. One of his 10 scores came through the air.

There’s little bits and pieces that you can pick apart from Duvernay’s college film which shows his true potential and possible longevity at the next level. He averaged more than 20 yards per reception during his freshman season at Texas, which was also surprisingly productive. But there’s a year and a half worth of proven numbers that show his transition to become a more well-rounded passing game target, while maintaining his status as a true deep threat.

Duvernay racked up just shy of 2,000 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in his last 19 games at Texas.

Projected Landing Spot: Indianapolis Colts, Third Round (75th overall)
