Texas Ex Marquise Goodwin traded to the Philadelphia Eagles
Former Texas football wide receiver Marquise Goodwin is going to bring his blazing speed from the San Francisco 49ers now to the Philadelphia Eagles.
More 2020 NFL Draft weekend drama ensued, and not all of it surrounding the Texas Longhorns football program and their former players sat among the prospects in this class. An impending trade that was expected to happen at some point heading into the weekend that would include the 2020 NFL Draft involved San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, and former Longhorn speedster, Marquise Goodwin.
The 49ers will be reportedly (ESPN) getting the sixth round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Goodwin. The Eagles and 49ers will be swapping their sixth round picks (190th and 210th overall) along with the Goodwin exchange.
Landing a wide receiver with pretty reliable hands and track-level speed is a huge win for a team like the Eagles. The Eagles were definitely one of the neediest teams in the entire league at the wide receiver position heading into the 2020 NFL Draft. And they were able to address a lot of that wide receiver need with the additions of former TCU Horned Frogs elusive weapon Jalen Reagor and trading for Goodwin.
This is also a big get for the Eagles to add more speed to their receiving corps. They’re definitely going to have a greater ability to take the top off opposing defenses with the likes of Goodwin and Reagor in the mix now.
In the NFL Combine back in 2013, Goodwin showed off his Olympic level speed by running a 4.27-second 40-yard dash time. He also showed off his general gifted physical tools by measuring in with a 132-inch broad jump.
Since he was the 78th overall pick of the Buffalo Bills in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Goodwin has played for two different teams. He played in Buffalo for four years, registering 49 receptions for more than 800 total yards and six touchdowns. But he really broke through in parts of a three year stint with the 49ers.
In those three years playing with the 49ers, Goodwin registered 91 catches for 1,543 receiving yards and seven touchdown catches. His best season came in 2017, when he raked in 56 catches for 962 receiving yards and two scores. Goodwin averaged more than 17.0 yards per catch back during the 2017 season.
Goodwin spent much of the 2019 season injured, and was placed on injured reserve by the 49ers back in December. He missed the entirety of their playoff run all the way through the Super Bowl. The recent injury troubles of Goodwin are likely to be a big reason why the 49ers traded him to the Eagles.
Joining an Eagles receiving corps that will also include rookies like Reagor and former Southern Miss Golden Eagles wideout Quez Watkins, there’s a lot of potential that Goodwin will have at his next landing spot. The Eagles also have an interesting quarterback situation brewing with the drafting of former Oklahoma Sooners and Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Hurts who could be backing up Carson Wentz this year.
