Could another big time target bite the dust as it pertains to the 2021 Texas football recruiting class winning the commitment of a four-star talent?

For the first time in a good while, the 2021 Texas football recruiting class finally found itself getting a big win with a big-time target. Three-star Atascocita tight end Landen King announced his commitment to Texas on April 26, which gave head coach Tom Herman and his staff some much needed good news over the weekend.

Yet, more bad news could be on the way for a more highly touted four-star target of the 2021 recruiting class for the Texas Longhorns football program. Four-Star Lincoln athlete and Tacoma, WA, native Julien Simon looks to be currently trending away from the Longhorns and more toward a school from the PAC-12.

Since Texas originally sent Simon a scholarship offer back on Jan. 27, Simon did have some level of interest in the Longhorns. By all accounts, Texas was at least moving in the right direction in relation to getting in good position to get a commitment from Simon.

By all accounts, the Longhorns were tangibly headed in the right direction with Simon when he announced that they were in his top eight finalist schools in a recent social media post. Back on April 1, Texas was included in the latest round of finalist cuts which also included the Oregon Ducks, Washington Huskies, Michigan Wolverines, Cal Golden Bears, Arizona State Sun Devils, USC Trojans, and Stanford Cardinal.

Texas was the only non-PAC-12 school to make the latest round of finalist cuts for Simon. But Simon does hold 20 schools on his offer sheet. The unlucky 13 of which he cut had some significant programs including the Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Penn State Nittany Lions, Tennessee Volunteers, and Wisconsin Badgers.

As far as the latest 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions go for Simon, head coach Clay Helton and the Trojans are trending heavily in favor of landing his commitment. All seven of the expert Crystal Ball Predictions in pick USC over the rest of the competition. Even the Rivals FutureCast gives USC the overwhelming edge to land Simon’s commitment.

Simon ranks as the nation’s No. 100 2021 high school prospect, No. 5 athlete, and No. 4 prospect out of Washington. This 6-foot-2 and 175 pound athlete primarily plays as a smaller linebacker or safety on the defensive side of the ball. On offense, he mainly plays wide receiver, but he can do running back.

The positional coach that is going after Simon from the Longhorns staff is recently promoted wide receivers coach Andre Coleman. That would indicate where Texas would want him to play at if he were to choose to take his talents to Austin.

Texas could use the added depth either at linebacker, safety, or wide receiver in their 2021 recruiting class. Simon would be a huge addition. But USC is trending heavily to land his commitment. There’s no clear commitment date by all accounts yet for Simon, but Texas needs to stay alive as the lone non-PAC-12 school left in his pursuit.
