The 2020 Texas football recruiting class got a crucial addition at a position of need on April 30, by landing four-star Austin, TX, native CB Jahdae Barron.

A huge addition retroactively to the 2020 Texas football recruiting class came on April 30, with former Baylor Bears four-star Pflugerville Connally cornerback commit and signee Jahdae Barron. This 5-foot-11 and 175 pound Austin, TX, native was originally signed down to his National Letter of Intent with Baylor back in December 2019 during the Early Signing Period.

Since the Texas Longhorns football program previously only had one true cornerback commit/signee in the 2020 recruiting class, this is huge. Cornerback was one of the emerging positions of need in the 2021 recruiting class since four-star John Tyler product Kitan Crawford was the lone commit at the position last cycle.

Part of the reason why Barron might have wanted to rescind his letter of intent with Baylor was the departure of former head coach Matt Rhule. After a breakthrough double-digit win season, and an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game and the Sugar Bowl, Rhule had Baylor back on the track to reach national prominence. But he bolted for the NFL earlier in the offseason to take the head coaching job with the Carolina Panthers.

Barron announced his commitment decision after re-opening his recruitment on the afternoon of April 30. On Thursday afternoon, he announced his decision to commit to the Longhorns over the rest of the more than 15 schools that offered him. He announced the decision on his Instagram page.

This was anticipated commitment announcement, though.

What the Longhorns are getting out of Barron is the nation’s No. 348 2020 high school prospect, No. 24 cornerback, and No. 51 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). The sole 247Sports recruiting ranking did have him much more highly touted as the nation’s No. 127 2020 high school prospect, No. 9 cornerback, and No. 20 prospect out of Texas.

He chose Texas this time around over the likes of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Washington State Cougars, Virginia Tech Hokies, TCU Horned Frogs, Tennessee Volunteers, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Baylor.

Texas held firm with the No. 8 ranked recruiting class in the 2020 national class rankings (per 247Sports Team Composite Rankings). But this is still a huge get that is likely better than whatever the Longhorns would be able to pull out of the NCAA Transfer Portal at the position.
