Texas Football: 3 best upset wins of the Tom Herman-era
More than likely, the biggest upset for the Longhorns under Herman’s direction in the last three years purely in terms of swing of point spread was in the Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. But the most significant to the fan base and the most memorable win came from the 2018 Red River Rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners.
Texas had pushed Oklahoma to the brink in the year prior, which was also Herman’s first as the head coach. Oklahoma would wind up hanging on behind the efforts of quarterback Baker Mayfield and tight end Mark Andrews to nab the 29-24 win. But they wouldn’t be so fortunate the following season.
Ehlinger and the Longhorns clearly came in with a chip on their backs right out of the gates. Texas would command the game for each of the first three quarters. They even won the third quarter by a score of 21-7. There was a point when Texas had a 45-24 lead in the second half. But the eventual Heisman winning quarterback Kyler Murray would drag his team back in the fourth quarter.
What would happen in the end is a memorable moment for Longhorns football fans all over the country. Then freshman kicker Cameron Dicker would nail a game-winning 40 yard field goal attempt with just nine seconds remaining. This moment will live on as one of the great games for the Longhorns for a long time.
Oklahoma was a 7.5-point favorite ahead of kickoff over Texas in this rivalry game.
