Former Texas football head coach Mack Brown is making waves on the recruiting trail with his No. 2 ranked class in the nation for the 2021 cycle.

A good start for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class heading into this calendar year didn’t bring much success until later last month. At one point, Texas’ 2021 recruiting class ranked as one of the top 10 in the nation. But they have since fallen back down to barely sit inside the top 20 ranked classes in the nation.

The Texas Longhorns football program still holds their top spot among the 2021 Big 12 recruiting class rankings. Texas has commanded that top spot in the Big 12 recruiting class rankings for every single full cycle since head coach Tom Herman took over in December 2016.

Herman is picking up more momentum on the recruiting trail of late by landing commitments from three-star tight end Landen King and four-star cornerback Jahdae Barron. Even pulling former Michigan Wolverines rising senior wide receiver Tarik Black out of the NCAA Transfer Portal was a huge get for Herman and the Longhorns.

However, there is one former Texas head coach that is finding much more success than Herman on the recruiting trail of late. That former Texas head coach is now in the same position with the North Carolina Tar Heels, Mack Brown. Now back with the program that he was at prior to taking the Texas head coaching job originally back prior to the 1998 season.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 UNC recruiting class ranks at No. 2 in the nation. The only program that the Tar Heels sit behind in the national class rankings are the Ohio State Buckeyes. It would take a monumental feat for UNC to pass up Ohio State in the national class rankings.

At this point, head coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes have three five-star commits and 12 four-stars in their 2021 class. Ohio State’s biggest feat this recruiting cycle was landing the nation’s No. 3 2021 high school prospect, five-star Pickerington North strong-side defensive end Jack Sawyer.

Furthermore, in UNC’s 2021 recruiting class, the top ranked prospect is is four-star Myers Park pro-style quarterback Drake Maye. UNC has 11 four-star prospects and three three-stars in the 2021 recruiting class.

At the very top of the Longhorns recruiting class, there are two commits that are more highly touted than any that the Tar Heels have in their group. Two high school teammates at Denton-Ryan, five-star athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders and four-star athlete Billy Bowman Jr. are both higher ranked recruits than Maye.

Nonetheless, the work on the recruiting trail thus far from Brown was impressive. UNC is making headway that is rare for that football program in the national class rankings. Most of the reason why they have such a high slot in the national class rankings in the quantity of commits. But landing 11 four-star commits is still impressive any way you look at it.
