Texas Football: Ranking 5 best QB’s coached by Tom Herman
Bonus points go out to the timing and success for which former Houston star quarterback Greg Ward Jr. saw while Herman was his head coach. Ward really started to see his star ascend to national prominence once Herman was taking the Cougars to new levels in 2015 and 2016. Houston won 13 games in 2015, including that famed New Year’s Six Bowl win over former head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Florida State Seminoles.
There was even some Heisman hype going Ward’s way entering the 2016 season, which doesn’t happen all that often for Group of Five quarterbacks. But he definitely deserved it. The best seasons for Ward in college came in 2015 and 2016 too. His most efficient season overall came during his junior campaign, though.
Ward registered 8,704 career passing yards, 52 passing touchdowns, and 26 interceptions, to go along with a 67.5 completion percentage. He added a whopping more than 2,600 rushing yards and 41 scores on the ground in his college career. Ward would also have 7.8 adjusted passing yards per attempt and a passer efficiency rating of 144.4.
While Ward was starring as Houston’s starting signal caller, Houston had a quarterback in waiting that was going to be a star. D’Eriq King was one of the backups behind Ward in the mid 2010’s with the Cougars. He would have a couple solid seasons with Houston before transferring to link up with former Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and the Miami Hurricanes this offseason.
