Texas Football: Ranking 5 best QB’s coached by Tom Herman
There’s only one Longhorns quarterback on this list largely due to the overall success and longevity of rising star senior Texas signal caller Sam Ehlinger in the last couple years. Ehlinger started in the bulk of the games for the Longhorns since the beginning of the 2017 regular season, also his true freshman campaign.
Despite all the success that Ehlinger found in college thus far, he’s still without a single All-American honor, Heisman finalist season, Big 12 Championship, College Football Playoff appearance, or even Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award. Those are all very aspirational accolades, but ones that Ehlinger has more than enough capability to compete for during his senior campaign.
Ehlinger is also the only quarterback on this list coached up by Herman that is still playing in college.
So far during this three years with Texas, Ehlinger registered 8,870 passing yards, 68 passing touchdowns, and 22 interceptions, to go along with a 63.2 completion percentage. He’s added 1,641 rushing yards and 25 scores on the ground. Ehlinger is getting very close to eclipsing the 100 total touchdown mark in college, which would be a huge accomplishment.
What Ehlinger does have under his belt is a perfect record in bowl games (3-0 if you include the 2017 Texas Bowl win over the Mizzou Tigers), a Big 12 Championship Game appearance, a Red River win, and a Sugar Bowl triumph over the Georgia Bulldogs. He should be the best that the Big 12 has to offer among quarterbacks in 2020.
