Statistically the best quarterback that Herman ever coached up during his three-year tenure as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Ohio State was their former star JT Barrett. And the very best season that Barrett had as the Ohio State starting quarterback was during his freshman campaign, also the only which Herman was his offensive coordinator.

When Barrett was getting most of the regular season starts for the Buckeyes during the 2014 regular season, he would compile an impressive enough resume to finish in the top five of the final Heisman voting.

During his freshman season, Barrett registered 2,834 passing yards, 34 touchdowns through the air, and just 10 picks. He added a career-high 938 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground in 2014.

Over the course of Barrett’s entire college career, he registered 9,434 passing yards, 104 passing touchdowns, and 30 interceptions, to go along with a 63.5 completion percentage. He added more than 3,200 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns on the ground while averaging five yards per carry.

A lot of the career numbers that Barrett posted fly well under the radar. He still holds the career record for passing touchdowns among any Big Ten quarterback. Barrett also ranks in the top five in recorded history in the Big Ten in passer efficiency rating. The most impressive Big Ten record he owns is the most total yards from scrimmage and touchdowns responsible for.
