One surprising recent addition at cornerback in the 2020 Texas football recruiting class could help bolster depth at the position in the coming seasons.

Heading into the 2020 season, the Texas football program will be looking to rejuvenate the play on the defensive side of the ball coming off two straight poor seasons statistically in Big 12 play. Last year, Texas wasn’t burned as much through the middle of the Big 12 slate as they were in 2018. But the offense also wasn’t playing as good which meant the defense needed to step up more than they actually did.

As a result, head coach Tom Herman made the necessary adjustment and let go of former defensive coordinator Todd Orlando after three years with the program. Texas also made a number of changes to the positional coaches on both sides of the ball starting at the conclusion of the 2019 regular season.

Herman brought aboard former Rutgers head coach Chris Ash to replace Orlando as the next defensive coordinator. Texas also brought on Mark Hagen as associate head coach for the defensive and co-defensive line coach, and Coleman Hutzler as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Jay Valai is serving in an important role as cornerbacks coach, as Texas needs to recruit and develop better at that position.

The goal for Ash and Valai this coming season will be the improved play of younger cornerbacks and better efficiency in pass coverage. Texas was one of the worst pass defenses in the Big 12 over the course of the last two years, which is a trend that needs to change.

How will Texas stack up as they look to improve the play specifically at the cornerback position this season?

Here’s a look into how the cornerback depth chart could stack up, as it stands now, for the Texas Longhorns football program during the 2020 season.
