Deeper down the CB depth chart

The Longhorns do have a decent injection of talent coming onto the Forty Acres at the cornerback position, especially thanks to a late addition to the 2020 recruiting class. Texas will have four-star John Tyler product Kitan Crawford coming aboard as what looked like the sole signee in the 2020 class. But four-star Pflugerville Connally corner Jahdae Barron announced his commitment to Texas last week after originally signing with the Baylor Bears 2020 recruiting class.

As it stands now, Crawford would be the more immediate impact corner compared to Barron. Crawford stood out at John Tyler, and possesses the versatility and athleticism to make an impact on multiple sides of the ball. Barron does have a lot of long-term potential, but it could take a while to get adjusted to the more aggressive Ash scheme in pass defense.

The other two less experienced options that Herman and Ash have further down the depth chart at the cornerback position includes senior former walk-on Hank Coutoumanos and to-be redshirt freshman former three-star recruit Marques Caldwell. The 6-foot-1 and 195 pound Caldwell possesses the strength and play-style to fit well in Ash’s scheme. He could be a good long-term player to watch in this secondary.

However, the first look in all likelihood for the Longhorns if Herman needs to turn to a fifth cornerback would be rising redshirt junior Kobe Boyce. The 6-foot-1 and 180 pound former three-star recruit never took hold of a significant role in the Texas secondary, but he does have 32 total tackles, one interception, seven pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery for his college career.
