Incoming freshmen/deeper down the depth chart

After losing out on the commitment of four-star 6-foot-4 wide receiver Quentin Johnston, when he flipped to join head coach Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs, the Longhorns 2020 recruiting class didn’t look near as good at the position. But they did still sign three capable playmakers at wide receiver, the highlight of which is four-star Troy Omeire.

Texas should also see the unique playmaking abilities of former four-star recruit Kelvontay Dixon and three-star Dajon Harrison step up to the plate at first in the near future. Dixon and Harrison are likely to be the two wideouts furthest down the depth chart, at least among the scholarship wideouts on the roster.

Omeire could get his shot to make an early impact, but he’s not the most game-ready wide receiver by all accounts. He has a very high ceiling to be a very productive possession wide receiver, but he’ll have to take at least a year or two to develop to become the most effective that he can be.

The other two names to watch that do have some level of experience that could be outside the two-deep depth chart at wide receiver are rising redshirt freshman former three-star recruit Kennedy Lewis and former four-star recruit and sophomore Marcus Washington. Lewis has plenty of long-term potential, but has run into off-the-field issues, and Washington could become a key player at the X-wide receiver spot if he plays his cards right this year.
