A distant target of the 2021 Texas football recruiting class, 4-Star Bloomingdale CB Philip Riley, announced his pledge to Notre Dame on May 5.

The most notable loss to the 2021 Texas football recruiting class early this week actually came on May 4, when head coach Tom Herman saw four-star Flower Mound-Marcus pro-style quarterback Garrett Nussmeier fall to the SEC foe LSU Tigers. Head coach Ed Orgeron and the defending National Champion LSU have taken both Nussmeier and four-star in-state defensive end Landon Jackson from Texas’ grasp.

Another prospect that the Texas Longhorns football program offered for their 2021 recruiting class that is a talented defensive back that they missed out on four-star 6-foot and 190 pound Bloomingdale cornerback Philip Riley to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. On the afternoon of May 5, the Valrico, FL, native Riley picked to take his talents to South Bend over offers from 39 other schools.

Riley announced that pledge to head coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame on his Twitter timeline, met with a raucous reaction from the Fighting Irish faithful.

The highlights of the schools he cut on his way to committing to Notre Dame included the Clemson Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes, Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, Texas Tech Red Raiders, USC Trojans, and Virginia Tech Hokies. Some of his top schools prior to committing to Notre Dame were Virginia Tech and Oregon.

The latest two offers he received last month came from the Pitt Panthers (April 20) and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (April 8).

Riley ranks as the nation’s No. 285 2021 high school prospect, No. 20 cornerback, and No. 45 prospect out of Florida (247Sports Composite). His sole 247Sports recruiting ranking slotted him as the No. 20 cornerback and No. 40 prospect out of Florida.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2021 Notre Dame recruiting class now ranks at No. 10 in the nation. They separate a bit from the Longhorns, who still hold steady at No. 13 in the nation and in the top spot in the Big 12.

Landing four-star 2020 Pflugerville Connally cornerback and former Baylor Bears signee Jahdae Barron last week to add to a retroactive recruiting class decreases Texas’ need at the position for the 2021 cycle. Missing on an out-of-state four-star defensive back like Riley doesn’t hurt all that much in the bigger picture for the 2021 recruiting class.
