A small hit to the 2021 Texas football recruiting class arrived on May 4, by losing out on 4-Star QB target Garrett Nussmeier to the LSU Tigers.

An increasingly expected miss for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class in recent weeks arrived officially at a commitment decision on May 4. Four-star Flower Mound-Marcus 6-foot-1.5 and 185 pound pro-style quarterback Garrett Nussmeier announced his commitment to the defending National Champion LSU Tigers over other competing schools like Texas and the Baylor Bears late on Monday afternoon.

If the Texas Longhorns football program wants to get a second quarterback commit in place in the 2021 recruiting class, alongside four-star Katy-Tompkins dual-threat Jalen Milroe, then they have to find a bona fide target soon. Recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich might be looking for a different skill set than what head coach Tom Herman and former OC/quarterbacks coach Tim Beck wanted.

Texas already lost out on the likes of two seemingly big late quarterback targets on the recruiting trail since the turn of the calendar year. That list of two now includes Nussmeier and four-star Lubbock-Coronado pro-style quarterback Sawyer Robertson (who committed to head coach Mike Leach and the Mississippi State Bulldogs).

However, the Flower Mound, TX, native Nussmeier does break a decent streak of momentum that Texas was building on the recruiting trail. Missing out on Nussmeier shouldn’t completely slow Herman and the Longhorns down, but LSU getting him does hurt if Texas wanted to take on a second quarterback in this class.

Prior to announcing his commitment to LSU on his Twitter timeline on May 4, Nussmeier held offers from 30 schools. Other significant schools that he cut on his way to deciding to pledge to LSU included the Georgia Bulldogs, Miami Hurricanes, Michigan State Spartans, Mizzou Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Penn State Nittany Lions, SMU Mustangs, South Carolina Gamecocks, TCU Horned Frogs, and Texas A&M Aggies.

The latest scholarship offer Nussmeier received prior to committing to LSU came from the rival Aggies, on March 19.

Moreover, Nussmeier ranks as the nation’s No. 104 2021 high school prospect, No. 7 pro-style quarterback, and No. 15 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). The sole 247Sports recruiting ranking for Nussmeier slots him as the nation’s No. 199 2021 high school prospect, No. 10 pro-style quarterback, and No. 33 prospect out of Texas.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, landing the commitment of Nussmeier pushes LSU past Texas to the No. 11 ranked 2021 recruiting class in the nation. Texas slides back to No. 13, while still occupying the top spot in the Big 12.
