Former Longhorn and Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas is in a very odd circumstance right now to say the very least.

The Baltimore Ravens veteran star safety and former member of the Texas Longhorns football program Earl Thomas currently finds himself in the midst of one of the weirdest offseason storylines in the NFL in recent memory. Thomas got himself involved in an incident that is all too rare and caused quite the stir in the media late this week.

Per a report from TMZ Sports on May 6, Thomas got caught in a violent situation with his wife after an alleged cheating incident. That got him in a situation where he was “caught at gunpoint” with his wife on the other end.

According to a report from NBC Sports on May 8, the incident Thomas was involved in doesn’t look to directly impact his contract at this point in time.

Here’s what that piece from NBC Sports Pro Football Talk had to say on this subject.

"Per a source with knowledge of the contract, the Ravens have no basis to contend that Thomas violated the contract or voided his guaranteed salary.Thomas was not arrested; if anything, he was the victim not the aggressor in the altercation with his wife, that resulted in his wife allegedly pointing a gun to his head and chasing him with a knife. It’s believed that, if a team source did indeed tell the Baltimore Sun that the team is exploring a potential violation, the team source is a low-level staffer who either doesn’t understand the situation and/or is looking to stir up trouble for Thomas. If the Ravens could void the $10 million guarantee and walk away from the deal, they possibly would. But they can’t. At most, they have the ability cut Thomas and realize an offset for whatever he earns elsewhere. Chances are he wouldn’t earn $10 million."

There were some whispers about the Ravens trying to find a spot that they could void the contract of Thomas after this incident, per a report from the Baltimore Sun. But that report from NBC Sports countered that claim that the Ravens are going to be able to find a way to get out of Thomas’ current contract.

In an Instagram video that was released earlier this week from Thomas, he addressed the situation exclaiming “things like this happen”.

Thomas went from getting his seventh career Pro Bowl nod during the 2019 season with the Ravens to finding himself in the weirdest off-the-field debacle that has happened yet this offseason in the NFL, and we are in the midst of a global pandemic.

The Ravens have a number of other former Longhorns on the roster at this point in time. Former Texas wide receiver Devin Duvernay was picked in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Other former Longhorn standouts like safety DeShon Elliott and all-time great kicker Justin Tucker.

Given all that’s happening in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a big change of pace in the news cycle. And there’s plenty of reaction ongoing surrounding this situation and the former Longhorn safety Thomas.
