A recent nice get for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class last weekend boosted them nearly into the top 10 in the nation on ESPN’s class rankings.

Most would use the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings as the main source for recruiting class rankings for each cycle in the college football landscape. But the ESPN RecruitingNation Class Rankings for the 2021 recruiting cycle does add some different perspective from a credible source on the top classes in the entire country. And the 2021 Texas football recruiting class is making some headway on ESPN’s college football recruiting rankings for this current cycle.

After the Texas Longhorns football program landed a commitment from three-star Martin outside linebacker Morice Blackwell on May 10, they got a nice jolt up the national class rankings on 247Sports and ESPN. In the ESPN 2021 recruiting class rankings (as of the afternoon of May 12), the Longhorns do rank in the No. 11 slot in the nation. Texas also holds the top spot in the Big 12.

The next best team in the ESPN recruiting rankings out of the Big 12 for the 2021 cycle is the Texas Tech Red Raiders, at No. 23 in the nation.

Texas is now up to nine commits in their 2021 recruiting class after landing the pledge from Blackwell over the weekend. They have seven of their nine commits in the ESPN300. And Blackwell is their most recent commit in the ESPN300 rankings.

Their top rated commitment in the 2021 class is Denton-Ryan athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders. In the ESPN recruiting rankings, Sanders is a four-star prospect and the No. 4 2021 athlete.

Texas ranks fourth in the Big 12 in terms of total number of commits. The Baylor Bears and Iowa State Cyclones are in the lead in terms of quantity, with 12 commits each. And the Kansas Jayhawks are the only other Big 12 program with a double-digit number of commits, with 10.

Just inside the top 10, the LSU Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting hold a slim lead in the ESPN recruiting rankings over the Longhorns. But head coach Tom Herman and Texas could be just one highly touted three or four-star commit away from cracking the top 10 on ESPN.

The top three in the nation in the ESPN 2021 recruiting class rankings include (in order) the Ohio State Buckeyes, Tennessee Volunteers, and former Texas head coach Mack Brown and the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Longhorns are also the highest rated 2021 recruiting class from any program in Texas.
