Former Texas football quarterback and DFW Metroplex native quarterback Shane Buechele made a kind donation to the city of Dallas for COVID-19 relief.

There’s multiple efforts from the Texas football program, now from current and former players and coaches, to help out in the relief in the face of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Texas players, coaches, and alumni are helping out right now in multiple different ways. Rising senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger has volunteered a lot of his time to help out in the community, as has head coach Tom Herman. Former Texas linebacker Jordan Hicks even helped at a local animal shelter in the Austin community.

Individually, Ehlinger established a GoFundMe page to raise money for COVID-19 relief. And Herman made a nice donation to the Central Texas Food Bank. There is a lot of good being done around the Texas Longhorns football program that provides some much-needed positive news in a time of pandemic globally.

But a former Longhorn that is now starring for head coach Sonny Dykes and the SMU Mustangs football program, rising redshirt senior quarterback Shane Buechele, “ponied up” a $50K check to donate for COVID-19 relief. The money will reportedly be funneled to different organizations around the Dallas community to front-line workers.

Shane and his girlfriend, Paige Vasquez, started a GoFundMe page to raise the money for this donation and apparently hit their goal in total. They started this campaign back on March 30, and listed the following description for the fundraiser.

"Dallas is home and we want to give back to the city that has given so much to us. Our hope is that we can show the City of Dallas that we are listening, we care and we are here. Your contributions will help us make that statement. This donation is coming from ALL OF US.The City of Dallas Emergency Assistance Fund helps local organizations respond to broad-based community emergencies that severely affect Dallas. As the City of Dallas battles COVID-19, donations to the fund will allow the City to provide monetary assistance to organizations on the front-lines of the pandemic that are working to help residents and businesses make it through this difficult time."

Buechele is a native of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and went to Lamar High School in Arlington, TX. He signed with the Longhorns in the 2016 recruiting class as a four-star dual-threat quarterback prospect.

He played bits and pieces of three seasons with the Longhorns before he transferred to SMU last offseason. Buechele had a standout redshirt junior season as the SMU starting quarterback, registering nearly 4,000 passing yards, 36 total touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions.
