The latest addition through the NCAA Transfer Portal for the Texas football program was former Michigan wide receiver Tarik Black.
A recent development to the world of the NCAA Transfer Portal landscape of late is the football ranking system, generated by 247Sports. The transfer portal ranking system will show in more organized fashion how prospect players on the open market grade out, all encompassing. And the Texas football program is one that could see how this impact could play out from the transfer portal.
The head coach of the Texas Longhorns football program Tom Herman has become well known for adding players out of the transfer portal at positions of need each offseason. Last year, Texas added former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets offensive guard Parker Braun through the portal. That came one year after Texas landed running back Tre Watson and offensive tackle Calvin Anderson out of the portal.
The big addition out of the transfer portal for the Longhorns so far this offseason came by way of landing former Michigan Wolverines graduate transfer wide receiver and rising senior Tarik Black. This previously often-injured former highly touted four-star recruit of Michigan’s should be a very solid get for the Longhorns if he can stay healthy during the coming season.
As far as the 247Sports transfer portal rankings go, Black slotted as one of the three wide receivers that was tied for fourth best at the position. Black also tied with Florida’s Justin Shorter (former Penn State Nittany Lion) and Oregon’s Devon Williams (former USC Trojan).
And the three receivers/tight ends that ranked ahead of Black were Oklahoma’s Theo Howard, Georgia’s Tre’ McKitty, and Mizzou’s Damon Hazelton.
Moreover, Texas did lose a wide receiver to the transfer portal earlier in the offseason, with former three-star recruit Jordan Pouncey joining his brother Ethan with head coach Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators. But landing Black is a definite upgrade over Pouncey.
During his three-year playing career at Michigan, Black registered just over 500 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He’s still played in less than 18 career games in college, largely due to lingering injury problems. But the talent level is definitely no question with Black.
