Landing two three-star commits on May 15 pushed the 2021 Texas football recruiting class back into the top 10 in the nation.

A big start to the weekend for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class saw them make some positive moves in the national class rankings. After landing two key skill position commitments on May 15 to kick the weekend off on the right foot, Texas moved into the top 10 in the national class rankings, per 247Sports Team Composite Rankings.

More specifically, the 2021 recruiting class of the Texas Longhorns football program is up to the No. 8 ranking in the nation and remains in the top spot in the Big 12 as of the evening of May 17. What pushed Texas up back into the top 10 on Friday afternoon was landing the pledges from three-star Hallettsville running back Jonathon Brooks and three-star Warren Easton wide receiver Casey Cain.

Brooks ranks inside the top 700 2021 high school prospects in the nation, and Cain is just inside the top 25 prospects out of Louisiana, and just outside the top 800 in the nation overall. Neither Brooks nor Cain is the most highly touted commit in the Longhorns 2021 recruiting class, but they do help provide a lot of depth at valuable spots among the skill positions.

The quality was there for Texas in this class for most of the cycle thus far, but the quantity wasn’t up to par with most other classes ranked inside the top 10 in the nation. Now that Texas is up to a double-digit number of commits in the 2021 class, they are more similar to the rest of the top 10. Each class in the top 10 does have at least 10 commits.

Moreover, Texas is the only program out of the Big 12 that ranks inside the top 10 in the nation, at least from 247Sports. ESPN and Rivals each rank Texas’ 2021 recruiting class No. 11 in the nation, and still in the top spot in the Big 12.

The next best class in the Big 12 comes from newly hired head coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears. In the 247Sports national class rankings, Baylor ranks at No. 16. The only other program from the Big 12 in the top 25 is the Oklahoma Sooners (at No. 25).

The highest ranked commit in the Longhorns 2021 class is five-star Denton Ryan athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders. He and his teammate, four-star athlete Billy Bowman Jr., are the driving force behind the national prominence of the Longhorns 2021 class.

Texas is now up to 11 commitments in the 2021 recruiting class. They currently have five four-star commits, one five-star, and five three-stars. If Texas can keep this waive of momentum on the recruiting trail of late up heading further into the 2020 offseason, then it could result in pushing to crack the top five in the national class rankings.
