In the mid-to-late 2000’s, the Longhorns have the best linebacking corps in the Big 12. Texas regularly produced some of the nation’s best defensive talent that was sent to the NFL during that time period. But there were some linebackers that flew under-the-radar that made their contributions with less recognition from fans and NFL scouts.

One of those linebackers that made quieter contributions for the Longhorns in the mid-to-late 2000’s is a former three-star recruit and Pearland, TX, native Scott Derry. As he signed with Texas one class prior to McCoy with the Longhorns, in the 2003 cycle, Derry also held offers from the likes of the Baylor Bears, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and Purdue Boilermakers.

Derry did get his first real shot to make an impact for the Longhorns during the 2006 season. And his best season came as a junior during the 2006 campaign. He registered 63 total tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, one sack, and one pass deflection. Derry then followed that up with 60 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, and one interception during his senior season in 2007.

Only staying around with the Longhorns through the first two seasons for McCoy as Texas’ starting quarterback, Derry was a teammate for half of his college career. The highlights of Derry’s career came in three games, in wins over the Rice Owls and Oklahoma Sooners in 2006 and a win over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2007.
