Texas Football: 3 most underrated quarterbacks in program history
The most notable name on this list that current Longhorns fans will recognize is the rising senior SMU Mustangs former graduate transfer quarterback Shane Buechele. Losing Buechele to the NCAA Transfer Portal last offseason, where he eventually joined head coach Sonny Dykes and SMU, was a necessary evil of naming Sam Ehlinger the starting quarterback.
The former four-star recruit and Arlington, TX, native Buechele committed and signed with the Longhorns as part of their 2016 recruiting class. He was ranked as a top 200 high school prospect in the nation and a top 10 player at his position. Since then, he’s had plenty of solid seasons in college. That would be most notably his first and most recent years with Texas and SMU.
During his freshman campaign with the Longhorns, Buechele registered 2,958 passing yards, 23 total touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 161 rushing yards, 7.4 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 136.0 passer efficiency rating. And last season, he compiled more than 4,000 total yards, 36 total touchdowns, just 10 interceptions, and 8.5 adjusted yards per passing attempt.
Over the course of his four year career thus far in college, Buechele has a 139.6 passer efficiency rating, 62.4 completion percentage, 70 total touchdowns, and 26 interceptions. While he is well respected among Longhorn and Mustang fans, he doesn’t get the recognition he deserves for the production he’s put up during his college career so far.
