Texas Football: 3 problematic Big 12 opponents for Horns in 2020
1. Oklahoma Sooners
The team that will be the highest ranked in the Big 12 in all of the major preseason polls will be the Sooners. Head coach Lincoln Riley is getting back a very talented Oklahoma squad that is likely to feature a new starting quarterback for the fourth season in a row, with former five-star dual-threat recruit Spencer Rattler.
Rattler will be leading a group of Sooners on offense that also includes rising junior running back Kennedy Brooks, junior wide receiver Charleston Rambo, and top tier NFL Draft prospect and junior center Creed Humphrey. Rising senior cornerback Tre Brown and junior safety Brendan Radley-Hiles will flank Rattler on the other side of the ball.
This will be a big task at hand for Riley to configure how Rattler can effectively replace the Heisman finalist and former Alabama grad transfer quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Last year like TCU, Oklahoma thoroughly controlled their showdown against Texas. Red River resulted in a victory that was more lopsided in actuality than it was on the scoreboard. Herman will hopefully have a more prepared offensive gameplan and a healthier team all-around this time around against Oklahoma than he did last year.
The COVID-19 pandemic could be a driving factor that impacts the Red River Rivalry game atmosphere more so than any other that the Longhorns face in Big 12 play this coming season. It’s hard to say that an empty stadium in Death Valley when they face the LSU Tigers this fall wouldn’t be the most radically shifted atmosphere without fans, but an empty Cotton Bowl is still a dramatic change.
Oklahoma and Texas will face each other in Red River during the regular season on Oct. 10. There is a chance for another rematch between these two rivals in the Big 12 Championship Game in December.
