Big 12 Football: OK State LB tests positive for COVID-19 first week back on campus
The return to campus for all Big 12 football programs didn’t go as planned this week for some, as one Oklahoma State player tested positive for COVID-19.
A foe of the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 Football conference, the Oklahoma State Cowboys, received some bad news on June 2. On Tuesday evening, rising senior Oklahoma State linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19 in the first week back on campus. Ogbongbemiga is really the first significant player in the Big 12 for football that was announced to have tested positive for COVID-19 as the teams work back into workouts for the summer.
The post from Ogbongbemiga on his Twitter timeline on June 2 stated that he could’ve contracted the novel coronavirus after attending a protest in Tulsa, OK. Ogbongbemiga was reportedly (ESPN) one of 30 players to return to campus in Stillwater this week. Oklahoma State is preparing for a return to football activities, which begins on June 15.
Per reported university procedures, Ogbongbemiga will be quarantined in separate campus housing and will be re-tested for COVID-19 on June 5 (this Friday). Once he’s cleared, per State and unversity protocol and procedure, he will be allowed to return to football activities this offseason.
This is clearly impactful news for the rest of the Big 12 football programs planning a return to football activities later this month. The Longhorns are also set to return to football activities as they attempt to prepare for potential fall camp and kickoff of the 2020 season, come Sep. 5 at home against the South Florida Bulls.
Texas needs to get ramped up soon with football activities, but obviously be smart with how they do it. How Big 12 teams are able to return for summer workouts later this month will be a big determining factor of how the 2020 college football season will be handled from here on out.
Oklahoma State and Texas are set to face each other on Nov. 27 during Thanksgiving Week. The game is set to take place at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater as the regular season finale for each team.
Last season, Ogbongbemiga registered 100 total tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble in 13 games played.
