There’s a potential second wide receiver target in the transfer portal emerging for Texas football with former Alabama four-star recruit Tyrell Shavers.

Given all the unproven options that head coach Tom Herman has with his receiving corps in the Texas football program for the coming season, he has tuned to the NCAA Transfer Portal for help. Texas already added the former Michigan Wolverines rising senior graduate transfer wide receiver Tarik Black out of the portal earlier in the offseason. But Herman and recently promoted wide receivers coach Andre Coleman could be seeking out another option already in the portal.

According to a report from Mike Roach of 247Sports on June 8 (paid content), the Longhorns are one of multiple programs in contact with former Alabama Crimson Tide transfer wide receiver Tyrell Shavers. The other programs reportedly mentioned in this piece in connection with Shavers are the Mississippi State Bulldogs, TCU Horned Frogs, and UCF Knights.

Shavers originally put his name into the transfer portal on June 2. He’s one of multiple former Alabama football players that put their names into the transfer portal this offseason. Linebacker Markail Benton, offensive lineman Scott Lashley, and quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa all transferred out of Tuscaloosa along with Shavers.

Coming out of Lewisville High School, Shavers was a four-star recruit that signed with Alabama’s 2017 class. He ranked as the nation’s No. 88 2017 high school prospect, No. 12 wide receiver, and No. 11 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). This 6-foot-6 and 205 pound Lewisville, TX, native held offers from the likes of the Auburn Tigers, Arkansas Razorbacks, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon Ducks, Texas A&M Aggies, USC Trojans, and the Longhorns, coming out of high school during the 2017 cycle.

During his three-year run in Tuscaloosa, Shavers did get one special teams touchdown, which came last season on a punt. Other than that, he had two touches for 34 total yards and no touchdowns receiving. He’s only played in bits and pieces of three games with the Crimson Tide.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions for Shavers in the transfer portal does have three experts picking him to land with Mississippi State over the rest of the field. We’ll just have to wait and see if he sticks around in the SEC West heading into next season.

In all likelihood, Shavers would have two years of eligibility remaining out of the transfer portal. He should have immediate eligibility come this fall, so landing him could add a very sizable and gifted wideout to this receiving corps.
