Texas Football: 3 best remaining wide receiver transfer options
The former Rice Owls standout 6-foot-4 and 205 pound wide receiver Aaron Cephus is another one of the potential hidden gems that is still left in the transfer portal for some reason. A good number of the best options that were left in the portal were scooped up at the beginning of this month. And with good reason since various programs are getting ramped up to summer workouts early this month.
But if the Longhorns still want to try and add a sizable wide receiver to the mix that could definitely make an immediate impact, then a potential Group of Five transfer could be the way to go. Herman and the Longhorns turned to the Rice football program before in the portal to find help. Two offseasons ago they looked to former Rice offensive tackle Calvin Anderson for graduate transfer help.
Now it could be Cephus.
Two seasons ago, Cephus reeled in 40 receptions for 565 receiving yards and five touchdowns. But ahead of the start of the 2019 season, Cephus was reportedly (Houston Chronicle) suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. While it was unclear if that suspension would lead to him missing any of the 2019 regular season, he wouldn’t wind up playing in a single game.
If Cephus is all free and clear at this point, then he is worth a look for Texas. The former Dekaney High School product that only held offers from Rice and the Nevada Wolfpack could be a nice find for Texas. He’s got good size, underrated speed, and tremendous versatility. For his two years playing at Rice, he registered 65 catches for nearly 1,200 receiving yards and 12 scores. He averaged more than 18.0 yards per catch was one of Rice’s leading wideouts in 2017 and 2018.
