A huge target of the 2021 Texas football recruiting class, 4-Star defensive end Shemar Turner, recently included the Longhorns among his 5 finalists.

One of the top remaining defensive line targets for the 2021 Texas football recruiting class as of early June is four-star defensive end Shemar Turner. This 6-foot-3.5 and 260 pound DeSoto High School product is a highly touted defensive lineman that would be tragic for Texas to miss out on.

On June 6, Turner did announce his five finalist schools on his Twitter timeline. Texas was one of those five schools that made his finalist list. It also included Alabama Crimson Tide, defending National Champion LSU Tigers, reigning SEC East title winner Georgia Bulldogs, and the Longhorns in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies.

Clearly Texas is the only school out of the Big 12 to make the latest round of finalist cuts for Turner. That could either give them a leg up in the race to land his commitment, or completely draw his attention to landing with a top SEC program.

Turner ranks as the nation’s No. 122 2021 high school prospect, No. 10 strong-side defensive end, No. 19 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). The sole 247Sports recruiting ranking had him out as the nation’s No. 67 high school prospect, No. 6 strong-side defensive end, and No. 10 prospect out of Texas.

This has to be one of the most significant targets to announce a finalist cut that included the Longhorns of late. Turner would be the Longhorns first strong-side defensive end commitment in the 2021 class. But Texas does have a couple of other weak-side defensive end commits (including four-star Memorial product Jordon Thomas).

Here’s a deeper look into the definitive breakdown of the five finalist schools Turner listed last week, including where the Longhorns would stand in line to land his commitment.
