News dropped this week that the Texas football program wasn’t spared among those with players testing positive for COVID-19.

With players returning to campus earlier this week, the Texas football program had to start getting ramped up for the looming 2020 season. Part of that process for a number of college football programs around the country early this month was a large scale of testing for the novel coronavirus.

One of the initial stories around the Big 12 in terms of positive tests announced for COVID-19 came from the Oklahoma State Cowboys rising senior linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga. And a number of other stories about programs having numerous players test positive for COVID-19 dropped throughout the last week or so.

There’s an entire CNN piece released on June 10 that lists out which college football programs have players that were announced to have tested positive for COVID-19 already.  Among those programs listed to have players testing positive for COVID-19 are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Iowa State Cyclones, Florida State Seminoles, and Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders men’s basketball program also had multiple players test positive for COVID-19.

A story initially broke from Horns247 earlier this week that one former walk-on for the Longhorns had reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. Another recent 247Sports report from June 11 mentioned that two Longhorns football players tested positive for COVID-19, and one has antibodies.

This report from 247Sports from Thursday morning cites a local press release from Texas sports physical therapist and athletics administrator Allen Hardin detailing that 58 Longhorns were tested for COVID-19 this week. And this is what the result stemmed from.

The players that tested positive for COVID-19 aren’t publicly known. Most instances of athletes publicly known to have COVID-19 come as a result of their own social media posts. We haven’t seen that yet from any Longhorns.

Texas is set to ramp up into summer workouts as we head deeper into the summer months. This is a situation to monitor moving forward, but it is also one that a number of programs are dealing with around the country.
