Texas Football: 3 games that will make or break the 2020 season
1. Oklahoma Sooners
Most notable returning player: Spencer Rattler, RS Freshman QB
The Oklahoma Sooners and LSU are without a doubt the two biggest opponents that the Longhorns have on tap during the 2020 season. There are still very important looming matchups on the road against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, at home against the Iowa State Cyclones, and at home against the Baylor Bears. But Oklahoma and LSU are going to be the “mega-matchups” that will decide the Longhorns national prominence this fall.
Oklahoma finished up with a record of 12-2 (9-1 Big 12) last season, including a win over the Longhorns in the Red River game during the regular season. Texas did get the best of Oklahoma during the 2018 regular season, but not in the Big 12 Championship Game that same season. And they definitely fell short in 2019, when injuries really started to mount for the men in burnt orange.
The most notable returning Oklahoma player for the coming season is the former five-star recruit and to-be redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler. Although he is far from the most productive returning player this season for the Sooners, Rattler should be the focal point when it comes to the Red River Rivalry game this fall against Ehlinger and the Longhorns.
Ehlinger and Herman tend to usually play Red River really close to the vest. And that pressure could really mount on Rattler this season. But he’ll have talented and proven returning teammates like redshirt sophomore defensive end Jalen Redmond, junior wide receiver Charleston Rambo, and junior running back Kennedy Brooks to help him shoulder the load.
